Wallpaper 101 – It’s Back and It’s Classy

I am old enough to remember when wallpaper was ‘in’ and ‘hip’ followed by people celebrating after tearing their wallpaper down. Do you remember this? Did the wallpaper look something like this?

70's wallpaper

To think most of the younger generation only thinks ‘wallpaper’ is referring to their smartphone image. As with all fashion and design, it’s cyclical and guess what’s back and better than ever!

Not only have wallpaper designs evolved, so has the technology making it a lot easier to DIY rather than having to hire someone. Nowadays, a lot of manufacturers offer ”Paste-the-wall’ which uses a special backing paper that does not expand when it gets wet. Since it doesn’t need to soak, the paste can be applied directly to the wall which saves a lot of time compared to regular wallpapers. You can see a video on how to install wallpaper at GrahamBrown.com.

You will still need to use a primer which is a sealant for walls that prevents paste from being absorbed into the drywall or sheetrock. It also allows wallpaper paste to “grip” otherwise slick surfaces. Primer is important to use prior to application, as it makes removing wallpaper much easier, and also ensures that your paper will stick properly without curling or falling.

Here are some fun wallpapers ideas we found on Pinterest.

When you are ready to make the jump (maybe for the 2nd time), here are some questions to ask when shopping in store or online. Be sure to measure the room or area so you know how much wallpaper to purchase.

  • Understand the type of wallpapers available such as vinyl, coated fabric, fabric backed vinyl
  • Make sure you know how the paper will look all together if the design is a pattern
  • See what type of applications are available such as the Paste -The-Wall
  • Longevity of the wall covering
  • Get lots of samples. Most websites offer them free aside from the shopping.

Let us know how it goes!
